Applications for Planetary Epicyclic Drives

Precise Speed Adjustment (of two mechanically connected driven elements):

Precise Speed AdjustmentFinishing of sheet metal requires elongation of the strip.  A continuous leveling machine must compensate for the variation in strip length and therefore precisely adjust the output cylinder speed.

In this application, the Planetary Epicyclic Drive is used in-line with the primary drive and combined with a mechanical variator to provide a small range of variable speed.

The use of a large reduction ratio K, reduces speed holding instability of the variator and therefore guarantees an extremely stable output speed even during acceleration or deceleration of the machine.

The power required at the variator is proportional to the differential output speed adjustment range.  For example, in an application which requires an output power of 100 hp (from the differential) and a speed range of 3.5%, the variator only transmits approximately 3.5 hp.

Using a Planetary Epicyclic Drive with a reduction ratio K = -24.27, the results obtained are:

N1 Input

+

N2 Input

=

N3 Output

Hence, the large speed variation on the case (1) from 268 to 1,122 rpm is reduced to a speed adjustment range of 3.5% of the differential input speed.
