Applications for Planetary Epicyclic Drives

Phase-Shifting (of two mechanically connected driven elements):

To obtain a multi-color graphic print, it is necessary to adjust the angular position of one set of impression cylinders relative to the other sets of impression cylinders.   The differential system is perfectly adapted to this requirement.

Normal Running Condition:

Normal Running ConditionThe case (1) is held stationary by a small brake motor.  The main drive is transmitted from one set of impression cylinders through the differential to the second set of impression cylinders.  The timing belt ratio R2 combined with the differential internal ratio p provides a synchronous speed between the two sets of impression cylinders which insures a linear web speed.

Correction of Angular (Circumferential) Position:

Correction of Angular (Circumferential) PositionThe correction of angular (circumferential) position of the impression cylinders (B) is obtained by driving the case (1) forward or reverse with the small brake motor.

The advance or retard of the angular position depends on the direction of rotation of the case (1).  It is possible to make this adjustment with the impression cylinders running or stopped.

For a Planetary Epicyclic Drive with a reduction ratio of K=38 and R1 = 3.15 ( ratio between motor and case (1)), the results obtained are:

  Rotation angle of motor (alpha) Rotation angle of case
(alpha/R1)
Rotation angle (correction) of impression cylinder set B
(alpha/R1 x K)
For 1 turn of brake
motor shaft
alpha = 360° ß = 114°17'

The precision of correction required determines the reduction ratio K as well as the transmission ratios R1 and R2.
