Cycloidal Differentials

Cycloidal Differentials

Overview:

The differential series 2SRD and DLS consist of a nearly zero-backlash cycloidal gear train.  They provide dynamic motion profiles including rapid acceleration rates, high speed and precise repeatability.  Therefore, 2SRD and DLS differential drive systems combine the reliability of mechanics with the precision of servo-electronics.

They meet all servo-drive requirements: minimum backlash, low input inertia, high torsional stiffness, precise repeatability, and reduction ratios from 12:1 to 100:1.   Backlash levels of 1 or 5 arcminutes are available.

The 2SRD is mounted on the driven machine shaft, via a hollow bore; the DLS comes complete in an aluminum housing.

Corbac KinematicsThis differential uses unique cycloidal kinematics to achieve its motion. The three main elements are:

  • 1. Secondary input shaft with double eccentric.
  • 2. Primary input housing with split internal ring gear.
  • 3. Output via crown gears, drive pins and shaft.

Motion of the elements is defined by the following formula:

N3 = p N2 + N1 (1 - p)

where p is the internal ratio equal to (K + 1) / K and K is the external ratio (see below).

The differentials can be used for cyclic synchronization of two speeds, creation of a relative speed while running, and dynamic register control.  Applications are typically found in the Converting, Printing and Packaging industries.
