Narrow-Band Draw Control Differentials

Narrow-Band Draw Control Differentials

Overview:

The DLA line of differential transmissions provide a narrow band of variable output speed (+/- 0.50 to 10% of input speed) while at the same time insuring that any speed set within this band will hold nearly as well as fixed gearing (i.e. less than +/- 0.005% deviation).  Therefore, the DLA provides the accurate speed setting and precise speed holding required to insure web or strip tension control.

The drives consist of an Epicyclic Differential Drive enclosed in a nearly cubic housing with co-axial input and output shafts, and a speed correction flange. Mounted on top is a high-quality, all-steel H-drive Mechanical-Speed Variator, connected by timing belts to the input shaft and correction flange, to form a closed-loop mechanical system.  It is also possible to replace the mechanical variator with a variable speed electric motor.

The motion of the three elements is defined by the following formula:

N2 = N1 p + N3 (1-p)

where:  N2 is output shaft, N1 is the input shaft, N3 is the auxiliary input and p is the internal ratio (see below).

* When used with a mechanical variator, the maximum transmittable torque of the DLA will be limited by the variator.  For more information, please consult the factory. The thermal capacity powers correspond to the average horsepower transmitted per hour while running continuously with an ambient temperature of 77º F.   Information provided is subject to change without notice.

Standard Internal Ratios:

p 0.877 0.9351 0.9462 0.9605 0.9736 0.9852
1.1403 1.0694 1.0569 1.0411 1.0271 1.015

When the DLA unit is used with a mechanical variator attached, the following speed ranges can be achieved:

p 0.877 0.9351 0.9462 0.9605 0.9736 0.9852
+ Speed Range 10.0% 5.3% 4.4% 3.2% 2.2% 1.2%
- Speed Range 8.6% 4.5% 3.8% 2.8% 1.8% 1.0%
* Using a 40/22 pulley combination on input, a 22/44 pulley combination on output, and a 6:1 mechanical variator.
These pulley combinations can be adjusted to fit the application.
